What a week it’s been! Meghan made FOUR appearances, Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 92nd birthday with Shaggy, and Kate gave birth to a surprisingly still unnamed baby boy!
April 19th
First up, Meghan and Harry attended a Women’s Empowerment reception as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. She’s been given a lot of responsibilities during the CHOG meeting, which has been touted as a major vote of confidence from The Firm before the wedding.
This was Meghan’s first foray into LBD territory, wearing the classic Black Halo “Jackie O” dress. A solidly pretty if not inventive choice – circa 2012, Jezebel called this particular number “the dress that won’t die”. I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I guess? However, this dress definitely benefited from spending some time in the back of her closet before making its triumphant return. She paired her “Jackie O” with fabulous Aquazurra pumps and a Gucci clutch. I was excited to see her branching out from crossbody and handled bags. A little diversity in accessories is always a good thing.
April 21st
More Invictus events! Megs joined Harry in celebrating the upcoming Invictus Games at the Australian Embassy. I can’t wait for her inevitable official visit to Australia for the games this Fall!
I LOVE this look – it’s probably my favorite dress she’s worn yet. Possibly only tied with the “Springsteen” dress. The dress is Self Portrait, topped with an Alexander McQueen blazer, and accessorized with Manolo Blahnik pumps and a Roland Mouret bag. This color is absolutely divine on her. I would wear all of this.
April 21st was a double-header for the soon-to-be-newlyweds – later that evening, they attended Her Majesty’s birthday concert which had an exceptionally strange lineup. Among the artists inexplicably chosen to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, 92-year-old great-grandmother, Head of the Commonwealth, and Defender of the Faith, were Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Sting, and Shaggy. Dear god.
She can be comforted that at least the whole family showed up to support her (sans Kate, of course, and Philip who is recovering from hip surgery). This is Meghan’s most formal (non-engagement portrait) look to date. The dress is a rare triumph from Stella McCartney and the insanely cool astrological clutch is from Naeem Khan. I don’t love the way the shoes seem to clash ever so slightly with the dress – imagine it with gold pumps? But the cape, I LOVE. More royal family members should return to their ancestors’ tendency for capes!
And the birthday girl herself looks quite fabulous, no? I love when she goes for a bit of sparkle! She also let her guard down just a little bit when she rolled her eyes when Charles called her “mummy” on stage. I could watch that GIF on repeat.
April 23rd
It’s a boy! Mazel tov to Kate who gave birth yesterday morning at 11:01 AM to a little Prince, weighing 8 lbs, 7 oz. Baby Boy Cambridge still doesn’t have a name, almost a day and a half later, but I’m sure one will be announced later this week. Top names in the running are Albert and Arthur…and all I can say is I hope they go with Arthur!
Like her previous two births, Kate opted for a custom Jenny Packham design, and looked as flawless and put together as we all wish we could look after giving birth. Sure, a glam squad helps, but you will NOT convince me that Kate isn’t just a little bit magic…
A lot of folks were noting that Kate’s dress was a tribute to the outfit Princess Diana wore to introduce Prince Harry to the world.
Before they brought Baby Boy Cambridge out to meet the world, Will brought George and Charlotte in to meet their new little brother. Which was just too freaking adorable. Charlotte even gave a little Princess wave and the whole world kvelled.
Seriously though, how sweet is this picture? *SOBS*
Shortly after it was announced that his sister-in-law had given birth, Harry and Meghan attended the 25th Anniversary Memorial Service for Stephen Lawrence, whose 1993 murder was a racially motivated hate crime – one that it took 20 years to get a conviction for.
It doesn’t feel entirely appropriate to discuss the merits of someone’s outfit during such a somber occasion – particularly one that feels more important to remember now than ever. I will suffice it to say that she looks lovely and appropriate.
Phew….what a week! See you all next time one of these guys leave the house!
