As always with the MTV Movie Awards, it’s a mixed bag…
Zendaya in August Getty Atelier
Embed from Getty ImagesLet’s start with the home run. Zendaya is somehow pulling off this Hershey’s kiss shaped brown leather dress in JUNE. She truly is magic. Pretty sure you’ll be seeing this on my “Best of 2018” list.
Aubrey Plaza in Elisabetta Franchi
Embed from Getty ImagesAdorable! This dress might be the physical embodiment of the antithesis to April Ludgate.
Katherine Langford in Giorgio Armani
Embed from Getty ImagesShe looks like the most inappropriately dressed mourner at a funeral. And to make matters worse, this was originally a perfectly nice dress that she went out of her way to have made into a jumpsuit….WHY!?
Storm Reid in Viktor and Rolf
Embed from Getty ImagesFor a hot minute I was afraid that the monsters at Coach got their hands on Storm, so I am thrilled to see her branching out and into something totally adorable.
Kristen Bell in Julien Macdonald
Embed from Getty ImagesI have never been a fan of Julien Macdonald. His particularly brand of sexy has the subtlety of a hand grenade. This isn’t the worst look he sent out on this red carpet, but it also feels way outside Kristen’s brand, and she honestly looked pretty uncomfortable in it.
Yara Shahidi in Tory Burch
Embed from Getty ImagesI would NEVER have pegged this for Tory Burch. I would have guessed maybe Monse or Stella McCartney or someone similarly associated with this kind of slouchy cool vibe. I like the jacket a lot, but the pants just feel a tad too silly.
Ajiona Alexus
Embed from Getty ImagesSpeaking of silly, the fact that I couldn’t find a designer credit for this is probably for the best, as this is less of red carpet dress as it is a fisherman’s net stapled to a pair of bicycle shorts.
Alison Brie in Sandy Liang
Embed from Getty ImagesSomeone pointed out that this is clearly a nod to her show “Glow” which follows the world of 80’s female wrestlers, which is cute…but not cute enough to make me like it. The eye shadow is just completely absurd – it makes her look like she can barely keep her eyes open.
Jasmine Sanders in Alexander Terekhov
Embed from Getty ImagesPutting the ridiculous, half moon sunglasses aside, I like this a lot. I have never heard of this designer, and neither it seems has the internet. He only has one collection displayed on Vogue and a lot of the sites I found were in Russian, but based on this I would love to see more of his work out and about!
Halsey in Julien Macdonald
Embed from Getty ImagesAnd here is our much, much worse Julien Macdonald look. This is just classic him and very within Halsey’s often naked wheelhouse. I hate it.
Mandy Moore in Alberta Ferretti
Embed from Getty ImagesWhen this came down the runway it was fitted much looser to the point that it looks like a completely different dress. I wish Mandy had gone a size or two up to get the effect from the runway.
Tessa Thompson in Rosie Assoulin
Embed from Getty ImagesWTF is this? I am on the record often as a fan of Rosie Assoulin’s work, but this is just nonsense.
Tiffany Haddish in Galia Lahav Bridal
Embed from Getty ImagesTiffany looked great, and as always, like she’s having the time of her life (in most pictures she was mugging it up for the cameras). But this feels too formal for the occasion.
Madelaine Petsch in Prada
Embed from Getty ImagesI am 99% sure I had this exact dress for my Barbie?
Kim Kardashian West in Atelier Versace
Embed from Getty ImagesZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………..Just the same old boring stuff from Ms. Kardashian. She could get any designer in the world to make her anything in the world, and yet she keeps relying on the same people and the same silhouettes, to no great effect.
Olivia Munn in Galvan
Embed from Getty ImagesFor a jumpsuit, I don’t hate it. But unlike Zendaya, she doesn’t have the sartorial magic to make me forget what season it is and forgive her for wearing velvet in the middle of June.
Zazie Beetz in Chloe
Embed from Getty ImagesZazie is SO, so very good on Atlanta. If you haven’t watched Season 2, please do – it’s a triumph from start to finish. Unlike this look, which sucks hard.
