Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards further muddied the awards season waters. Glen Close tied with Lady Gaga for Best Actress, while “Roma” beat out “Green Book” after a weeks worth of bad press. There were few surprises on the red carpet though with no one taking too many risks and everyone looking pretty chic.

Embed from Getty ImagesThis is A LOT of look. She has the confidence to carry off almost anything, so it’s unsurprising that she plucked this look “as is” off of Crazy Karl’s runway. I actually don’t hate it, although I would have eliminated the white long-johns.

When I was preparing these posts I noticed a surprising trend – a shocking number of stars were wearing Monique Lhuillier. Now, Monique has a fair amount of red carpet success, but to get EIGHT people in her designs on one of the biggest red carpets of the year is quite the feat.

Embed from Getty ImagesOnce again and for the last time, Keri was denied the award she so richly deserves for “The Americans”. She looked fabulous while losing, though, and I was surprised to find out that this is actually separates – a sequined bodysuit and matching skirt. Both of which you can buy for your own red carpet needs if you happen to have a spare $2,790 laying around.

Unlike this year’s films, I’ve seen a good deal of the nominated TV Shows. Among the winners, there were some long awaited blessings, like “The Americans” FINALLY winning Best Drama and a win for Patricia Clarkson in “Sharp Objects”. And then there were the obvious wins for “Killing Eve” and “The Assasination of Gianni Versace”. But there were also some equally frustrating wins – I’m looking at you, “The Kominsky Method”. The more things change, the more they stay the same, and a show about old white dudes will beat out a show like “Atlanta”. Sigh.
Sandra Oh in Atelier Versace
Embed from Getty ImagesSandra co-hosted the telecast with Andy Samberg and they both gave a charming 110% to a show that was thoroughly mediocre. However, her styling for the evening, from two Versace’s to a shockingly good Stella McCartney, completely made up for any mediocrity. This origami inspired Versace is one of my favorite looks of the night. It is classic, old school Hollywood glamour. I particularly love the way her side-swept hair balances out the exaggerated sleeve on the other side.
Well, it’s been a while! After a (somewhat) brief hiatus to win some political campaigns, we’re back for awards season!
As always, we’re kicking things off with the Golden Globes, the drunk uncle of award shows. The telecast was booze-fueled, scattershot, and sometimes uncomfortable – but unfortunately for those of us who revel in fashion extremes, it was a pretty tame and put together red carpet. Last year, the Globes red carpet was shrouded in black to draw attention to #TimesUp, so I was excited to see a return to some color and drama.

Embed from Getty ImagesLady Gaga was supposed to be the woman of the night, but ended up largely snubbed, along with the rest of “A Star is Born”. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s 4th (!) adaptation of the classic film only received one award for Best Song, which was basically a given. I don’t necessarily think that Gaga went big on the red carpet because she thought she was going to win (although she wouldn’t have been wrong for thinking that), I just think her default is “big”. She kicked off her promo tour for “A Star is Born” in at the Venice Film Festival in a phenomenal, feathered Valentino, so I was thrilled to see her put her trust in Pierpaolo Piccioli again. I think the execution here is somewhat less successful – it’s the rare dress that might actually be overwhelming on her, and the bodice clearly has some fit issues. But I do appreciate the commitment to the “ice queen” look from hair, to jewels, to giant, giant sleeves.

Mandy Moore in custom Rodarte
Embed from Getty ImagesUgh, Rodarte. This is so much better than most of what they throw down the runway, but I’m still not on board. I find this ridiculously unflattering around her stomach for something that was custom.
I almost universally love these ladies, but find myself largely underwhelmed by their Emmys looks.
